The Beginning

1970 - 1979

The history of Hallam begins in 1970, when David Hallam, following his father’s footsteps, graduated from Norwich University with an Electrical Engineering degree. David worked as an estimator for an electrical contractor before becoming a design engineer for a consulting engineering firm. His background and understanding of both design and construction would prove to be very beneficial as he would grow a diversified engineering and control system contracting business, Hallam-ICS.

Ready, Set, Start a Company…

1980 - 1989

As legend has it, Dave started Hallam Associates, P.C. the day after receiving his Professional Engineering license. While Dave enjoyed learning his profession, he always felt that something was missing from the businesses that he worked for. Dave believed that a company should create an environment that provides all employees with respect, recognition and the opportunity to build their own future.

Digital Equipment Corporation was the Hallam Associate’s first client. Digital was so impressed with David’s previous work that it gave Hallam as much work as he wanted. The company grew, adding additional expertise in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Control systems along the way.

While attending a preliminary project meeting at one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, a group of Hallam engineers managed to offer a solution that saved client over $1 million in costs on that project.

In 1991, Integrated Control Systems (ICS) was established as a division of Hallam Associates, Inc. becoming one of the few companies in the country that were providing engineering and turn-key control system integration. Clients included: IBM, General Electric, University of Vermont, Vermont Air National Guard, OMYA, IDX Corporation, Bombardier, Wyeth, Mobil Oil Corporation, Tambrands. IBM became a long-term contract client.

Growing Up in the World

1990 - 1999

The 1990’s represented a period of tremendous growth for Hallam. Leveraging the core knowledge of the semiconductor industry, including clean design, tool accommodation, toxic gas monitoring control systems (TGMCS) and facility monitoring and control systems (FMCS).

Over $20 million in annual sales

Hallam completed projects all over the world, including Canada, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Russia, Mexico and Thailand.

85% of clients comprised Hallam’s repeat business. New clients included: National Semiconductor, Dominion Semiconductor, White Oak Semiconductor, BOC Gases, B.F. Goodrich Aerospace, Georgia Pacific, International Paper, Whiting Turner, Ben & Jerry’s, Luzenac America, Burton, Fletcher Allen Health Care.

The Winds of Change

2000 - Present

Hallam entered into the new millennium proud of what had been accomplished in 20 years of business, but aware that the company needed to change to help our clients in the future. The first step to reshaping Hallam was an easy one; listen to our clients.

With the help of a market research firm, Hallam talked to our clients about what they needed today and what they would expect in the future. It became clear that our clients expect technical expertise, but value customer service. Hallam forged ahead intent on building technical expertise and developing a methodology for ensuring customer service (CODE).

The company, now known as Hallam-ICS, is being selected by clients such as Pfizer, LifeNet, Genzyme, Amgen, Texas Instruments, Nortel Networks, and Intel; by the institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Cornell, Trudeau Institute, and by the Department of Defense and the Pentagon to perform MEP, controls integration, and commissioning and qualification services.

ASHRAE Journal, Laboratory Design News, Clean Environments Magazine, to name a few, are featuring articles written by Hallam engineers.

While working on a renovation project for a global pharmaceutical manufacturer, the Hallam-ICS team was able to complete the project without any interruptions to the research processes at the facilities, as well as managed to finish ahead of an aggressive schedule.  The key to a successful completion of this project was constant communication between Hallam-ICS engineers and the end-users of the lab space – research staff and laboratory technicians.

With growing attractiveness, recognition and demand by clients of sustainable design and LEED practices, Hallam-ICS began providing services to help clients achieve building LEED certification. What started with one LEED AP is now a team of eight experienced LEED AP engineers, and the numbers are growing.

Along with the LEED consulting, Hallam-ICS made Commissioning & Qualification service available to the Biotech and Pharmaceutical clients. From office expansions to new $100 Million laboratories, Hallam-ICS’ commissioning client list includes LifeNet, Harvard University, Johnson & Johnson, Astra Zeneca, to name a few.

A new office in North Carolina was opened in November of 2005 with a mission to provide instrumentation and calibration services. It proved to be a good move in the right direction. Our commitment to developing our people, processes and systems is reflected in our high rate of repeat business which approached 90% in 2007. The continuous growth of the instrumentation & calibration business, particularly in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries has allowed Hallam-ICS to add new instrumentation calibration technicians, and to build upon our extensive Metrology Database for instrument tracking. To support this growth, Hallam-ICS has invested over $100,000 in new calibration equipment and standards in 18 months period.
