B156A Chemistry Labs MEP Engineering Design

We approach our work from a Whole Facility Design Perspective, resulting in elegant, efficient engineering solutions that are practical and reliable, maximizing your long term benefit from your facility.

Challenge

Hallam-ICS was selected to provide MEP engineering design of ~5,000 GSF of lab space and additional support office space. The goal of the project was to maximize fume hood capacity of the space. Hallam-ICS designed the HVAC system for 21 fume hoods of various sizes and sash configurations, assuming no diversity. The exhaust system was upgraded to provide full N+1 redundancy.

Solution

The supply air flow rate of the lab is 13,000-21,000 cubic feet per minute (CFM) and the air change rate is 21-47 Air changes per hour. Upon completion of construction, all 21 fume hoods passed ASHRAE 110 tracer gas testing. A true testament to the attention to detail during the HVAC system design.

In addition to the Chemistry lab space, an analytical lab space was created as a separate HVAC zone. This space is fit out for flexibility with mobile casework, overhead utility service panels, and snorkel exhaust drops for GC/MS exhaust.
High purity Helium (He) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) storage and distribution was provided to the Analytical tools.

Results

Our team accomplished the following:

  • Designed an HVAC system supporting 21 fume hoods with full N+1 redundancy, ensuring high capacity and reliability for the lab space.
  • Achieved ASHRAE 110 compliance for all fume hoods through precise system design and testing, providing a safe and efficient laboratory environment.
  • Delivered a flexible analytical lab space with mobile casework, utility service panels, and advanced gas distribution systems, tailored to evolving research needs.
