Mechanical Engineering Support
Hallam-ICS’ project team brought the necessary combination of machine design expertise, flexibility, and attention to detail to provide practical solutions for client's objectives.
Challenge
Boise Cascade’s plywood mill in Moncure, NC required modernization of its green-end equipment, where logs are processed into veneer. The project aimed to improve performance by upgrading drives, motors, and gearboxes for 10 pieces of equipment while addressing incomplete records of existing configurations. Additional challenges included standardizing components to streamline inventory and ensuring new designs fit within existing structures with minimal modifications, all while maintaining operational efficiency.
Solution
Hallam-ICS conducted a thorough on-site survey to verify conditions and used this data to design optimized drive systems using stock components from preferred manufacturers. Custom mounts and slide bases were engineered for seamless integration, improving access for maintenance and allowing prefabrication to reduce installation time. The team iteratively adjusted layouts to maximize standardization and ensure compatibility, balancing technical requirements and operational objectives.
Results
Our team accomplished the following:
- Component Standardization: Reduced variations to two gearbox types, two belt sizes, and eight sprocket sizes for 10 drives.
- Maintenance Optimization: Designed for easier access, improving service efficiency for belt replacements and oil changes.
- Seamless Installation: Completed the project with zero contractor RFIs, ensuring smooth execution.
