Harvard Mitrano Lab

MEP Design And Install - Mitrano Laser Lab

Implementing a secure, uniform site-wide system for enhanced safety and emergency response.

Challenge

Renovating a 130-year-old historic building with low ceilings to accommodate modern laboratory requirements while ensuring precise environmental control, EMI and vibration mitigation, and maintaining the architectural integrity of the Jefferson Physical Laboratory at Harvard University.

Solution

Hallam-ICS collaborated with HGA Architects to design a fully integrated MEP system. The design met strict HVAC tolerances for the Optics Lab, incorporating movable overhead service carriers and adjacent sample prep areas, while addressing challenges of the building's age and constraints.

Results

Our team accomplished the following:

  • Precision Environmental Control: Designed HVAC systems achieving ±1°C temperature stability and ±5% humidity within an ISO 8 clean-not-classified Optics Lab.
  • Seamless Integration: Integrated MEP utilities into movable overhead carriers to enhance functionality and user experience in a constrained historic space.
  • Advanced Laboratory Support: Provided adjacent facilities with utilities for chemical cleaning, preparation, and sample storage to support the Optics Lab effectively.
