Commissioning & MEP Engineering Consulting

We approach our work from a Whole Facility Design Perspective, resulting in elegant, efficient engineering solutions that are practical and reliable, maximizing your long term benefit from your facility.

Challenge

The University of Massachusetts spans five campuses across the state.  As the University was preparing to begin on a multi-year building program, they were looking for experienced leadership to establish a robust commissioning program.  Hallam-ICS was brought on to provide this leadership as an engineering (MEP) and commissioning consultant for the University of Massachusetts Building Authority. With close to 60,000 students and five campuses, UMass has a wide diversity of facilities to accommodate their many needs.  Hallam-ICS has been involved as an MEP and commissioning consultant for selected capital construction projects over $1 million in value. In this role, Hallam-ICS has performed peer reviews of engineering designs, developed commissioning plans and specifications, developed and executed commissioning protocols and provided engineering support.

Solution

The projects have been very diverse, including a new 75,000 square foot Central Heating Plant for the Amherst campus, a BSL-3 Research Building expansion for the Dartmouth campus and a Pumphouse renovation for the Boston campus.  Each project has its own unique technical challenges, but the overall process of understanding the project’s objectives, developing appropriate solutions and delivering benefits to the key stakeholders remain the same.

Results

Our team accomplished the following:

  • Enhanced Facility Efficiency: Successfully developed and executed commissioning plans and protocols for diverse capital projects exceeding $1 million, including complex facilities like a 75,000 sq. ft. Central Heating Plant and a BSL-3 Research Building expansion.
  • Delivered Engineering Excellence: Conducted peer reviews of engineering designs, ensuring high-quality standards across multiple campuses with varied technical challenges.
  • Tailored Solutions Across Campuses: Addressed unique needs for UMass campuses, delivering customized engineering and commissioning support that aligned with the University’s strategic building objectives.
