Vermont Foodbank Backpack Program

Barre, VT

Vermont Foodbank

"The Backpack program helps Vermont's food-insecure children to be free from worry about going hungry on the weekends, when federal meal assistance is not available, by filling their backpacks each Friday during the school year with tasty, nutritious food items.  "

"This supplemental food allows children to come to school on Monday alert and engaged, better able to succeed. The Vermont Foodbank provided nearly 112,000 pounds of food to 1,435 students in 36 participating BackPack schools in the 2019 – 2020 school year. Although the pandemic has caused immense changes to school schedules and procedures, the need for food assistance is still strong, with 38 schools participating in 2021, providing for 1,700 students year round."

"The Vermont Foodbank offers so many wonderful resources to our community and, Hallam-ICS has supported the foodbank for several years. One program that VFB offers is the Backpack Program which supports school aged children who might not have access to quality, healthy foods over the weekend when they are not receiving lunch through the school. Children enrolled in this program go home each weekend with a backpack full of non-perishable, healthy food. Feeding our children helps them learn, socialize, and feel secure. I am pleased to nominate them for the Hallam-ICS 40 Weeks of giving donation."
