Challenge

Pfizer needed a clear, practical strategy to modernize an active laboratory and processing suite while maintaining uninterrupted day-to-day operations. The existing facility featured aging HVAC and electrical systems, fixed casework, obsolete utilities, inconsistent cleanroom finishes, limited power and data capacity, and layouts that no longer supported evolving equipment, workflows, safety, or contamination-control requirements.

Beyond identifying deficiencies, Pfizer needed to understand which improvements could be implemented immediately, which required larger infrastructure investments, and how multiple renovation projects could be phased to minimize disruption to critical research and processing activities.

Solution

Hallam-ICS developed a multidisciplinary feasibility study and Basis of Design that transformed existing-condition assessments into a prioritized, phased implementation roadmap.

Our team evaluated architectural conditions, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, electrical systems, process utilities, cleanroom performance, safety requirements, material flow, equipment access, and laboratory workflows. Room-specific recommendations were coordinated with facility-wide infrastructure needs to create a comprehensive modernization strategy.

The study included:

  • Existing-condition assessments and stakeholder interviews
  • Cleanroom, airflow, pressurization, and contamination-control evaluations
  • HVAC, exhaust, humidity-control, and utility-capacity analyses
  • Electrical, emergency power, lighting, and data infrastructure reviews
  • Laboratory planning, equipment access, and workflow improvements
  • Safety system, drainage, and emergency eyewash/shower evaluations
  • Phasing recommendations aligned with operational and capital priorities

Hallam-ICS also quantified future supply and exhaust air demands, identified which early-phase renovations could be supported by existing infrastructure, and determined when major air-handling and exhaust system upgrades would be required. This enabled Pfizer to distinguish near-term improvements from long-term infrastructure investments and confidently plan future capital projects.

Results
